Julia Roberts character in Pretty Woman starts the movie wearing large hoop earrings but along with her transformation comes an upgrade to pretty woman pearls! We see her wearing large pearl drop earrings on gold french wire like these.
Marilyn Vance, a popular costume designer at the time, chose these earrings to mark the rise of Roberts' character, Vivian Ward. Sometimes called a modern day Cinderella, she is seen shopping on Rodeo Dr. and at the polo match in her pearl earrings. The origin of these pretty woman pearls were a vintage earring design made in gold with genuine cultured pearls. Vance made two more pair in imitation pearl and mixed metal to rotate throughout the shooting of the film.
One of the imitation pairs were auctioned at Bonhams in 2014 as part of their "There's No Place Like Hollywood" auction. They were estimated to be sold for between $4000 and $6000.
This image is from the sale. Other great notable images are from the Pretty Woman movie itself showcasing Julie Robert's wearing this design.
This 1990 film (I know, it has been that long!) recently came to my attention when a customer walked into our Athens store and asked, "Do you remember Julia Robert's earrings in Pretty Woman?" I embarrassingly did not remember them! "Well those are the earrings I want!" she replied.
So, inspired by Julia Robert's pretty woman pearls, we created our very own Pretty Pearl Earrings using 14K gold ear hooks with a slightly earring hook and a different ball size and added a large, genuine Pearl Girls pearl! Our customer will be so thrilled and we think you will be, too.
This are, of course, merely inspired by this movie and our customer's request and is in no way endorsed by this movie or its stars. Thanks, y'all!
